Instrument Care & Maintenance Guidelines

To maintain the performance and lifespan of your Foot Medic surgical instruments, we strongly advise the following care procedures:

1. Cleaning

  • Rinse instruments immediately after use to remove blood, debris, and fluids.

  • Use a pH-neutral enzymatic detergent to clean manually or in an ultrasonic cleaner.

  • Avoid prolonged soaking or harsh chemicals, as these can damage the instrument's surface.

2. Drying

  • Always dry instruments thoroughly with a lint-free cloth after washing.

  • Moisture left on instruments can cause rust, staining, and corrosion.

3. Lubrication

  • Use a dedicated instrument lubricant (surgical milk) on all joints and hinges after each cleaning.

  • Lubrication helps prevent friction damage and protects against rust.

4. Sterilisation

  • Instruments should be autoclaved according to manufacturer and HTM guidelines.

  • Ensure all hinges are open during autoclaving.

  • Do not stack instruments tightly — use sterilisation pouches or trays with care to avoid damage.

5. Storage

  • Store in a clean, dry, and ventilated area.

  • Do not store wet or damp instruments.

  • Inspect regularly for any signs of wear or corrosion.

6. General Handling

  • Avoid dropping instruments or using them for unintended purposes.

  • Replace or service instruments showing signs of fatigue or wear.

  • Oil hinges, moving parts and surfaces frequently to prevent oxidation on the surface of metal instruments.
